2nd June 2004
thinktanktheatre to debut with Pinterís The Lover in Guildford.

thinktanktheatre’s debut production in The Mill Studio at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford is a darkly comic tale of the necessity and danger of fantasy. One of Harold Pinter’s most direct exercises, The Lover is a subtle and intimate comedy described by Pinter’s biographer, Michael Billington, as “… an absolute gem, one of the most candid and revealing plays about sex in the English language.”

Although highly praised for its formal elegance, the stunningly simple and irresistibly warped premise of The Lover must have perplexed audiences when first produced in 1963.

Richard and Sarah live in a detached house in Windsor; Richard is the typical commuter to the city who leaves his wife each morning and returns in the evening. But the illusion of respectability is shattered when Sarah calmly discusses with her husband the lover who visits her in the afternoons.

Cast members and co-founders of thinktanktheatre, Jane Huxley and Saul Ware, last performed at The Mill Studio in 2000 but in separate productions. Jane played the part of Emma in another Pinter classic, Betrayal, as part of a highly acclaimed and sell-out tour of the South of England whilst Saul’s performance in five different roles in Writer’s Cramp by John Byrne was described by one critic as “sublime”.

Performances of The Lover are on Friday 9th July at 8.00pm and Saturday 10th July at 4.30pm and 8.00pm. Tickets are priced £10 (Saturday matinee 2 for 1) and are available from The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre box office on (01483) 440000.
